Study Abroad

Global Engagement.

Transform your mind and world through off-campus experiences in global urban centers that broaden your horizons and make you a better designer.

Living and studying in a new environment is not only a fun adventure, but it also enriches your experience and education, while you explore different perspectives and immerse in diverse influences.

Many of the programs we offer are in different countries, but there also are opportunities in the U.S., which is why we often refer to study abroad as “off-campus study.” Whether far away or closer to home, we feel that off-campus study is an important, often transformational experience.

We require off-campus study for undergraduate Architecture majors. This can be a semester abroad or at the Nashville Urban Design Studio. Interior Architecture and Graphic Design majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad, and students in Landscape Architecture have opportunities to study abroad, too. In general, our undergraduate students study off campus during their third year.

Being totally immersed in European society widened my cultural perspective, so now I see the world through a lens of personal experience from studying abroad.

Explore Our Opportunities

Denmark

Study in the heart of medieval Copenhagen, Denmark. You’ll be surrounded by history and tradition in this beautiful city, but the Danish capital is also on the forefront of sustainability, design, urban planning and architecture.

Finland

Experience Finland’s celebrated architecture and unique culture. We offer two programs in Finland, one at the Finland Summer Architecture Institute for Architecture majors and one at the Helsinki Metropolia University for Interior Architecture majors.

Germany

Study at the renowned Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The campus is located downtown in one of the most beautiful mid-sized towns in Germany. Known for its art and culture, Weimar was also the hometown of many famous German writers, philosophers and composers.

Italy

Develop your ability to think critically about design in relation to its physical, cultural and geopolitical contexts. The Rome Alliance provides an unparalleled opportunity to be exposed to buildings, landscapes and urban contexts alongside the historical and cultural forces from which they emerged over three millennia.

Poland

Krakow is a fascinating traditional city that has long been the cultural and university center of Poland. Our college was the first architecture program in the United States to establish a study abroad program in Poland and has helped in the “rediscovery” of the architectural treasures that were previously not very accessible to the West. This program, established in 1992, is our longest-running study abroad program and includes an exchange component that gives students from Krakow an opportunity to study with us in Big Orange Country.

United States

Study at the Nashville Civic Design Center in the heart of historic downtown Nashville. Our Nashville Urban Design Studio uses Metropolitan Nashville and Middle Tennessee to explore and experience the issues and opportunities confronting the region, including examples of its most interesting historic and contemporary architecture and public spaces. Other state-side opportunities are being investigated.

Mini-Terms

Mini-term experiences are solutions for students who want more than one experience. They do not satisfy the requirement for off-campus study in undergraduate Architecture. Several mini-term experiences are offered each year in our college, most often during the summer. Some of our recent mini-term trips have included

  • Florence
  • Japan
  • Portugal
  • Rome
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom

Other Programs

In addition to the programs offered by our college, the university’s Programs Abroad Office provides options for overseas study, research, intern and service-learning programs.  Get started by visiting the Programs Abroad Office for more information.  The Programs Abroad Office is a unit in the Center for International Education, a department within the Division of Academic Affairs that serves as a catalyst at every level for the internationalization of the entire UT community.
