The UT College of Architecture and Design offers a “learning community” options for freshman and second-year students. Our community has a specific focus and provides distinctive opportunities to connect with classmates, develop valuable skills, become involved in campus life, and ultimately enjoy success as a UT student.
The Design Community is a unique living arrangement for architecture and interior design students who have been admitted to the College of Architecture and Design. As a freshman on campus, the transition to a large university can be quite intimidating. The Design Community provides architecture and design students with a “home base” cluster of fellow classmates and the chance to embark on this new chapter of life together. Residents are enrolled together in core freshmen courses and introductory courses in their individual programs and share rooms in Morrill Hall.
As a member of the Design Community, you can participate in all of the programs available to other residential hall students. In addition, you also participate in events and activities designed just for you. You can partake in recreational activities such as retreats, laser tag, and skiing. You have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of community services, such as serving at the Soup Kitchen and working with Habitat for Humanity.
The Design Community also helps you with the challenging curriculum of the College of Architecture and Design. You spend a majority of your time outside of class working on projects and assignments. The opportunity to live with other freshmen with the same classes is invaluable as members of in the Design Community form study groups, help each other with projects, and walk to and from the Art & Architecture Building together. The Design Community is the perfect place for you to find lifelong friendships and other students with a passion for learning.
Applying to the Design Community
To live in the Design Community, you must be admitted to the College of Architecture and Design. If you request a roommate in the Design Learning Community, your requested roommate must also meet the criteria for and be accepted into Design Learning Community housing.
Interested students should:
- Complete your electronic housing contract you will receive at your UTK e-mail address after paying your enrollment confirmation fee;
- Select your housing/dining preferences and learning community choices;
- Submit your contract;
