@utklandarch students continue their visit in Ariz

@utklandarch students continue their visit in Arizona, where they are conducting research for their design proposals related to electromagnetic territories. Pic 1: Biosphere 2 is a series of self-sustaining greenhouses that feature a wide variety of earth's biomes. These range from desert, to coastal mangroves, to tropical rainforest. Here students are exploring the 'Foggy Coastal Desert', a type of desert distinct from the one here in Arizona. The Biosphere was originally started as a way to simulate humans living in closed resource loop environments.

Pic 2: The namesake of Saguaro National Park, Saguaro cacti dot the landscape as far as the eye can see. Already standing 15 feet high, these are still juvenile cacti. Saguaros do not produce their first flowers until year 50 and do not grow their signature 'arms' until age 75.

Pic 4: Like many desert species, the Horned Toad (actually a lizard) utilizes spines and water-tight skin to protect itself from predators and the elements alike.

Pic 5: In what is thought to be a ceremonial rock pile, petroglyphs by the Hohokam people are visible.

Students in Andrew Madl’s @utklandarch studio ar

Students in Andrew Madl’s @utklandarch studio are in Arizona this week researching large-scale infrastructures and how they impact territories, the economy and ecologic systems. They are particularly interested in the territory around Fort Huachuca that has low electromagnetic interference.

Pic 1: Lavender Pit, a copper mine located near Bisbee. At its lowest point the mine drops 850 feet and measures 5,000 feet across.

Pic 2: Las Cienegas preforms habitat restoration for prairie dogs by digging artificial burrows and cutting grass short. Students can observe the prairie dogs but cannot approach for fear of collapsing underground burrows.

Pic 3: Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. Here the desert scrub changes to open grassland managed for cattle grazing and habitat for wildlife such as pronghorn.

Pic 4: Small border towns and checkpoints exist along the US-Mexico border wall.

Pic 5: Cottonwood trees grow high above everything else within dried riverbeds. When they die they leave behind massive bone structures in the landscape.

Many of our 4th-year Interior Architecture students are in Chicago touring and networking. David Matthews’s studio visited the new @hermanmiller showroom today. Other groups from Hochung Kim and Misri Patel’s studios are visiting other important locations in the Windy City. These are the opportunities that make a difference in students’ education.
