May 11, 2020 Students Win 2020 “First Impressions” Contest

Because of coronavirus, we’re not working from campus, but we’re always working on campus!

Third-year Architecture students, Sarah Lloyd and Tate Hill, were named two of the 2019-2020 winners of the Volunteer First Impressions Contest at UT Knoxville. Created by the Facilities Services department for on-campus enhancement projects, the Volunteer First Impressions Contest promotes student engagement while sprucing up public areas around campus that need extra attention.

Lloyd and Hill’s proposal focused on a small section of campus that impacts students and faculty daily. They proposed a sidewalk that would connect the parking garage on Volunteer Boulevard to the west end of the Art + Architecture building, ultimately replacing the current, man-made footpath.

Though the concept is simple, this sidewalk would better direct foot-traffic, improve the look of our campus and enhance campus infrastructure overall.

Entries were judged on “first impressions,” their overall impact to students, faculty, staff and visitors as well as a scope within the limit of $10,000 to complete.
