January 30, 2017 David Wooley, Architect and Former Professor, Celebrated for Lasting Influence

David Wooley, FAIA, former professor in the UT School of Architecture and partner at BarberMcMurry, died on Jan. 29. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Valerie D. Wooley.

While the college mourns his death, current faculty also remember him fondly as an assistant professor in the college in the 1980s. Wooley graduated from Mississippi State University and Washington University but called Knoxville home for 36 years and contributed greatly to students’ education as well as the architecture profession throughout the region.

In recognition of his contributions, the American Institute of Architects Tennessee presented Wooley with the 2016 William Strickland Lifetime Achievement Award for the Profession of Architecture. This award is the highest honor bestowed by the AIA and recognizes a significant body of work influencing the built environment and those who exhibited a lasting influence on the profession.

Wooley supported his alma mater by serving on the MSU advisory council and was named alumnus of the year in 2001. In Knoxville, he supported the community through serving on various boards and the University of Tennessee Chancellor’s Associates and as president of the AIA Tennessee in 1997.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 5-7 p.m., and Wednesday, Feb. 1, 10-11 a.m., at Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel. A celebration of life will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations go to the Tennessee Architecture Foundation.
