Jack Hopkins

Jack Hopkins, P.E. is an adjunct lecturer who brings a 44-year career in engineering to the School of Architecture. Jack’s firm, Applied Engineering, has been a designer for many educational and athletic facilities at the University of Tennessee. While teaching building systems and integrations, he first values understanding of fundamental concepts before introducing the complexity that is inherent in them. Topics include heat transfer theory, health and indoor air quality, building science, building mechanical systems, and lighting. Jack’s initial experience preceded the use of computers for design, although he has embraced their use and growth in practice. He was an early developer and user of load calculation and energy analysis software and still applies those skills and tools to project and research activities.
