AI… To Be Determined

November 5, 2023 - December 7, 2023

As a part of the college’s fall lecture series, AI… TBD (Artificial Intelligence… To Be Determined) is an exhibition, curated by Julie Kress and Mark Stanley, featuring the work of artists, designers, and architects whose work practice makes use of artificial intelligence.

The exhibition critically examines generative AI tools in creative practice. While many in the world are using these new tools, a comparative few are deploying them with rigor and intention, and further few with attention to the political, social, and existential capacities (and liabilities) embedded in the images and texts. It is our goal to spark a critical examination and conversation about the roles and capacities of generative AI tools, with special attention to the larger scope of 21st Century human/non-human dramas and entanglements.

The exhibit brings together three exemplary image-makers—Shelby Doyle, Curry Hackett, and Andrew Kudless—whose work with generative AI pushes beyond the novelty of the tools, unfolding their potentials to shake loose new possibilities in design processes, both technically and thematically. In addition to these, the exhibit includes images created by UT students and faculty submitted through an open call. These important contributions feature the creative intellects of our own community, helping us reflect on how we use AI tools and how we might plot trajectories forward.

A critical conversation between the guest artists and curators will be held at 12 p.m. on Monday, November 13.
