Maria Hurtado de Mendoza

Maria Hurtado de Mendoza_estudio.entresitio, associate professor, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and principal of estudio.entresitio, will lecture at the College of Architecture and Design on Monday, April 11.  The lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be held in the Art + Architecture Building’s McCarty Auditorium, 1715 Volunteer Boulevard.  It is free and open to the public.

Hurtado de Mendoza’s lecture, “fuzzy bounded,” describes estudio.entresitio’s recent work with an emphasis on conceptual strategies and transposition into architectural space.  The lecture is presented as a fuzzy-bounded idea in itself, the vehicle to rethink recent work and see if the original intentions are indeed present and how much a certain body of work provokes related answers or establishes connections beyond the expected.  At some point, design will be about blurring the limit between interior and exterior and the vanishing of certain patterns and logics in the translation from 2D into 3D or in the way the thickness of materials is addressed in the physical construction of space.

International award-winning architect, Maria Hurtado de Mendoza_estudio.entresitio, is an associate professor in the School of Architecture at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Prior to NJIT, she was a faculty member at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (ETSAM) for 15 years and visiting critic at Cornell University.  Hurtado de Mendoza is an International Associate AIA and AIANY housing committee member.  She was awarded the Rome Prize in 1996.

estudio.entresitio is an architectural practice based in Madrid and New York that is invested in the material actualization of the architectural concept. The practice has extensive building experience with an emphasis on public work that utilizes novel solutions to the functional and necessary without sacrificing the creative or exploratory.  Its built work has received more than 30 awards, including the ArchDaily “Building of the Year 2012” (healthcare) for the trilogy San Blas+Usera+Villaverde, Madrid.  Additionally, in 2007, Architectural Record selected the firm as Design Vanguard, and in 2015, working in joint venture with MGP from Bogotá, entresitio won the International Award for the National Museum of Memory of Colombia.
