In the context of projected population and job growth in the City of Cleveland, TN, Bradley County, and broader Southeast TN region, as well as the separation of the Blythe/Oldfield Neighborhood and Cleveland’s Downtown area by physical and social barriers, students are proposing area redevelopment master plans that focus on abandoned industrial sites and other underutilized properties. This community-engaged studio is being conducted as part of the University’s Smart Communities Initiative (SCI) Pilot Program with the City of Cleveland.

MEDIUM-MEGA SUPERSCAPES is an exploration wholeheartedly aimed at the future city. Setting out to inject high levels of spatial imagination and experimentation into untapped territories within infrastructural fabrics of Downtown and Old City Knoxville, studio participants were tasked to cultivate and configure potentials that point to future charges and urban spaces yet to be imagined. With design agility as the prime investigative fuel, a multitude of operational modes have led to a series of spatial invitations, questions, projections and hints of what could be.
Our mission for this experimental studio was not to solve problems, or to “get it right”, but rather to identify, invent, suggest, cultivate, refine, develop and broadcast versions of an urban imaginaries for Knoxville in ways that only such a studio set-up can possibly deliver.
