Lecture: AI… TBD
November 13, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
As part of the AI…TBD exhibition in the Ewing Gallery of Art + Architecture, the curators will host a critical conversation with the guest artists who work is on view.
AI:TBD (Artificial Intelligence, To Be Determined) critically examines generative AI tools in creative practice. While many in the world are using these new tools, a comparative few are deploying them with rigor and intention, and further few with attention to the political, social, and existential capacities (and liabilities) embedded in the images and texts. It is our goal to spark a critical examination and conversation about the roles and capacities of generative AI tools, with special attention to the larger scope of 21st Century human/non-human dramas and entanglements.
The exhibit brings together three exemplary image-makers—Shelby Doyle, Curry Hackett, and Andrew Kudless—whose work with generative AI pushes beyond the novelty of the tools, unfolding their potentials to shake loose new possibilities in design processes, both technically and thematically. In addition to these, the exhibit includes images created by UTK students and faculty submitted through an open call. These important contributions feature the creative intellects of our own community, helping us reflect on how we use AI tools and how we might plot trajectories forward.
This lecture is funded by the Robert B. Church III Memorial Lecture Fund. Information about visitor parking is available on Parking and Transportation’s website.
