Nicholas de Monchaux, architect, writer and associate professor of architecture and urban design at the University of California, Berkeley, will lecture on Monday, February 27, 5:30 p.m., at the College of Architecture and Design, as part of the college’s 2016-2017 Robert B. Church Memorial Lecture Series.

Watch the lecture live.

The lecture is free and open to the public and will take place in Rm. 109, McCarty Auditorium, Art + Architecture Building, 1715 Volunteer Blvd. It offers continuing education units and will be streamed live.

de Monchaux will present “Local Code: 3,659 Proposals about Data, Design, and the Nature of Cities.” Offering 3,659 design proposals for vacant sites in New York, San Francisco, Venice and Los Angeles, the lecture poses a new set of possibilities for an architecture that takes place at the scale of the city yet works alongside the city’s own innate organization to reject traditional notions of site, structure, and the discrete architectural object.

de Monchaux is the author of Spacesuit: Fashioning Apollo and Local Code: 3,659 Proposals About Data, Design, and the Nature of Cities. The work of his design practice, based in Oakland, California, has been exhibited at Biennial of the Americas, the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Lisbon Architecture Triennial, SFMOMA and the Chicago MCA. His work has been supported by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, the Hellman Family fund, the Smithsonian Institution and more.

de Monchaux holds degrees from Yale University and Princeton University. At present, he serves as the director of the Berkeley Center for New Media and is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome.
