Headshot of Ari Melenciano

Join us for a live streamed lecture on Oct. 19, 2020, 6:30 p.m. ET, featuring Ari Melenciano, designer, creative technologist, artist, founder of Afrotectopia and lecturer at New York University and Pratt Institute.

Melenciano will lecture on “Electromedia, Design Fluidity, and Black Radical Imagination.” In this talk, Melenciano describes her electromedia practice, omni-specialized design research, and pedagogical approach to design in speculating and building futures that are ecologically-centered, equitable, and pluralistic. She will share her research on indigenous and Afrocentric practices and technologies, Afrocentric pedagogical designs, and the intersectional and imaginative community building process of Afrotectopia.

Melenciano’s work explores how various forms of design impact the human experience and how to create artistic environments that cultivate curiosity and imagination. Melenciano has guest lectured and presented at multiple institutions, including MIT Media Lab, Harvard GSD, SVA, Parsons, Fordham, Queens College, EYEO, Google SPAN, Primer, and AfroRazones (in Havana, Cuba). Her work is currently being supported by Eyebeam, NYU Future Imagination Fund, NY Live Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art, Guild of Future Architects, New Inc., and the Onassis Foundation.
