No costDesign Lessons from Conservation History
Today’s designers, conservationists, and ecologists seek to protect and repair connections—between species and their habitats, and between humans and their fellow species. What can these efforts learn from history? Journalist Michelle Nijhuis, author of the book Beloved Beasts, will discuss the history of the modern conservation movement from its Victorian beginnings to the present day, looking at its successes and failures and investigating its many lessons for our uncertain times.
Michelle Nijhuis is the author of Beloved Beasts: Fighting for Life in an Age of Extinction, a history of the modern conservation movement that was named one of the best books of 2021 by The Chicago Tribune, Smithsonian Magazine, Booklist, and other publications. She is a longtimecontributing editor of High Country News and a regular contributor to The New York Review ofBooks. After 15 years off the electrical grid in rural Colorado, she and her family now live in WhiteSalmon, Washington.
This lecture is funded by the Robert B. Church III Memorial Lecture Fund.
