SC+UTK #8: BOSS LEVEL

WELCOME TO OUR 8th WORKSHOP @UTK!
In this culminating workshop of our 2014-15 Digital Deployment series, Section Cut invites students to abstract and reinterpret the familiar. Our site begins as the UTK atrium, but will quickly transform into an intricate imaginary world.

After manipulation of digital photography, students will underlay and extrude abstracted images to construct novel terrain. We will evaluate and occupy these newly constructed sites as if they were levels of a video game – infused with speculative program, atmosphere, and narrative.

The workshop will explore the combined capabilities of Rhino and the Adobe Creative Suite, providing an opportunity to dream outside the confines of the studio brief, and a transportable graphic workflow that translates Rhino models into beautiful isometric representations.

What you’ll need
+ Laptop running in windows with Rhino 3D and Adobe Creative Suite
+ Access to printers (we’ll be working in 11×17, color)
+ Digital camera or smartphone

Saturday

9:30 am – 10:00 am
Welcome & Mini-Lecture: BOSS LEVEL
+ JS & KS deliver SC intro & our workshop’s conceptual frame

10:00am – 10:30pm
Siting: Photograph, Pixelate, Assign
+ Quick photoshoot in the UT Atrium
+ Crop and pixelate photos to a 9×9 grid in PS
+ Assign values to pixel zones in a range of -12 to +12

10:30am – 11:00pm
Siting: Underlay, Extrude, Print
+ New image is imported into Rhino as an underlay
+ Extrude zones based on assigned values
+ Save, Set View as isometric,Make 2d, and Print 11×17 B&W

11:00am – 12:00pm
Dreaming: Evaluate, Sketch, Comb
+ Develop an accessible path from top to bottom.
+ Choose your adventure. (program/scene)
+ Begin translating sketches to Rhino

12:00am – 1:00pm
Lunch – Sesh
+ 5 progress presentations from volunteers
+ SC introduces rendering techniques

1:00pm – 3:00pm
Desk Sessons & Finishing
+ At 2pm, freeze your Rhino work, and export to AI
+ SC delivers Adobe Suite Strategies
+ Develop short narrative or introduction of your scene
