Square Room Film Screening: “If You Build It”
April 4, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
FreeDesign inspiration is coming to the Square Room on Friday, April 4 through the free screening of “IF YOU BUILD IT.”
A joint effort of the UT College of Architecture and Design and the AIA East Tennessee, the event will present a special, one-night free screening of the critically-acclaimed documentary featuring UT 2001 B. Arch graduate Matt Miller! As an added bonus, Miller will introduce the film and answer questions after the screening.
Doors open at 7pm with light hors d’oeuvres and a cash-bar provided by AIAETN. The film begins at 8pm followed by the Q&A.
IF YOU BUILD IT follows designer-activists Emily Pilloton and Matthew Miller to rural Bertie County, the poorest in North Carolina, where they work with local high school students to help transform both their community and their lives. Pilloton and Miller fight against the odds to lead their students through a year-long, full-scale design and build project that does much more than just teach basic construction skills: it shows ten teenagers the power of design-thinking to re-invent not just their town but their own sense of what’s possible. IF YOU BUILD IT offers a compelling and hopeful vision for a new kind of classroom in which students learn the tools to design their own futures.
This event is made possible in part by the generosity of Café 4 and the Square Room. Consider calling 865-544-4144 to make dinner reservations at Café 4 before the event.
