Julie Beckman

Director of Student Development, Adjunct Assistant Professor

Julie is the Director of Student Development and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee.  In this position, she is responsible for helping to expand the reach of CoAD’s exemplary programs to positively impact recruitment, retention rates and professional & industry placement. The Center for Student Development, which Julie heads, is located on the ground floor of the Art + Architecture Building.  The Center is the epicenter of undergraduate advising and student records and also serves as a student lounge, design library and welcome center for prospective families.

She has been teaching, coordinating and administrating in architecture education since 2004, previously at Catholic University and at the University of Pennsylvania.

Practice

In practice, Julie and her partner, Keith Kaseman launched their design firm, KBAS in 2002 following the unanimous selection of their design proposal for the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, VA which opened to the public in on the 7th anniversary of the attacks.  In addition, KBAS was commissioned to design a memorial to the Space Shuttle Columbia and its crew in Nacogdoches, TX which is still in schematics.  Compact and agile, KBAS flexes its robust capacity for research and development, spatial exploration, advanced production, geometric resolution and material experimentation through all of its work.

Prior to launching KBAS, Julie worked for over 3 years in retail design and development with clients such as Calvin Klein Jeans, Donna Karen and Ralph Lauren Polo.
