Michael Ambrose
Associate Professor of Practice
Michael Ambrose, AIA, NCARB is an architect and capital project manager at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he manages a diverse portfolio of academic, research, and infrastructure projects with Facilities Planning & Design at UNC. Michael is a registered architect in NC, MD and PA with nearly 30 years of experience in the profession. He holds a Master of Architecture in History, Theory, and Criticism of Architecture and Urban Design from Syracuse University where is Studied in Florence, Italy and a Bachelor of Architecture from Temple University where he studied in Philadelphia and Rome, Italy.
Before joining the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Michael taught at several schools of architecture across more than 25 years as an educator, including the University of Maryland, Syracuse University and Drexel University. Michael has frequently served as a guest critic at several schools of architecture, including MIT, Syracuse, Cornell, Pratt, SCAD, RISD, Kingdom University, Bahrain (جامعة المملكة) and the Catholic University of America among others. His contributions through professional, educational, and volunteer efforts reflect his commitment to excellence, diversity, and the transformative power of architecture and design.
Michael currently serves as a Director on the Board of Directors for the AIA Triangle in Raleigh, NC. He is a passionate advocate for the AIA and the profession of Architecture and the profound impact architecture and design can have on individuals and communities. He is an ardent supporter of fostering a more diverse and inclusive architectural profession, recognizing the positive roles architects can play in society.
Michael also serves as an At-Large Member of the Southern Regional Council of the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP). He is a strong believer in the power of bringing people together to shape a more resilient and innovative future for higher education. He values the collaborative spirit of integrated planning, where shared insights and best practices drive meaningful impact on college and university campuses.
