Summer Design Camp! Big Orange and Big Design

UT Summer Design Camp

Our 2021 Summer Design Camp will be virtual and offered to students from all over the region and nation!

In accordance with University guidelines, our camp will be offered as a virtual online experience, providing access to an immersive learning environment for students interested in architecture and design.

JULY 12-23, 2021 (2 Weeks, M-F, of online design learning)

What you will experience:

  • Learn how to communicate information and ideas using foundational design principles including color, pattern, space, form and composition
  • 2D and 3D analog and digital representation techniques.
  • Design topics including theory, history, technology and professional practice.
  • A glimpse into design education at the University of Tennessee!

In this new format, campers will meet remotely with award-winning faculty and upperclassmen students who will help guide them through design exercises and projects.  And just because we’re online, doesn’t mean we won’t get our hands dirty and make a mess!  A kit of supplies will be shipped to each camper prior to the start.  This kit will include materials and tools to make and create.

Cost:  $475

Check out the online brochure for more information on content, schedule and tuition.

Curiosity is the sole prerequisite.

Come spend two weeks with us this summer in a virtual UT design studio to learn about design and your place in it during our summer design camp for high school students. You’ll learn about architecture, interior architecture and graphic design and how they impact the world.

This camp is for creative, problem-solving, out-of-the-box thinkers. It’s a July design-immersion experience that offers motivated high school students an introduction to design and how design impacts the human experience.

You’ll also learn a lot about yourself and the world, and you’ll probably meet lifelong friends.

No Experience Needed

Previous architecture, interior architecture or design experience is not necessary.  If you’re a rising freshman, sophomore, junior or senior in high school and have an interest in design and how it impacts the world, this is your place.  Just bring your creativity and curiosity.

What’s a typical week?

As the last year has taught us, nothing is considered ‘typical’ these days.  We are, however, proud to say that our camp is (and always has been) anything but typical. On Day 1, we plan to immediately begin in the (virtual) studio, and throughout the week, you will be introduced to Architecture and Design faculty and be engaged in both digital and analog activities that challenge the way you think about design. Even though we are not physically together, we will be offering one-on-one guidance as you explore your kit of parts and use these components to make and create.

Faculty-led studios and lectures will introduce you to different ways of thinking, seeing and re-imagining the future of our built environment.

Despite the distance, there will be a lot of learning and laughter, too.  Perfect ingredients for a memorable experience.

The UT Summer Design Camp was fundamental to me entering the Architecture program at UT. It immerses you in the community environment of the studio. For anyone who wants to get a glimpse of any design program in the college or gain an advantage by having some experience with the 3D programs, Summer Design Camp is invaluable.

Architecture…Interior Architecture…Design?

Don’t worry. Summer camp provides instruction in architecture, interior architecture and design, in general. We’ve got you covered.

Full and partial scholarships will be awarded for summer camp.  Scholarships are open to high school students who will be entering their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior years this fall.  Please note: If you wish to apply for a camp scholarship, we recommend you do so before registering for camp. Scholarship applications are due May 28th, 2021
