Dean Jason Young has named Scott Wall, professor in the School of Architecture, interim director of the school for the 2021-2022 school year. Wall will assume the position on July 1, 2021. Young previously served as director for seven years before being named dean.

An alumnus of the college, Wall (’83 B.Arch) has taught in the UT College of Architecture and Design for 18 years and previously served as director of the School of Architecture from 2009-2014. He also has led the college’s Finland Summer Architecture Institute since 2007, for which he received the UT Knoxville Chancellor’s Global Catalyst Award in 2020. The award recognizes innovative and exceptional work that enhances international and intercultural awareness among undergraduates.

“We have exceptional students and an extraordinary faculty,” Wall said. “As we move away from the difficulties of the past three semesters and into a post-pandemic normal, I believe our ability to recover will have much to do with our demonstrated abilities to adapt to a changing educational and social environment. Our work this year will require patience, flexibility, and determination in equal measure to find productive and affirming ways to address the social and cultural changes wrought by our recent past,” he said.

In 2019, Wall published Rooted in Experience: An Encounter with Juhani Pallasmaa, and in 2021, he published the book, Currents and Trajectories: The Governor’s Chair in Energy + Urbanism, an in-depth review of the college’s Governor’s Chair program spanning from 2014-2020.

Wall is a licensed architect and has earned national design awards from the Association for Collegiate Schools of Architecture and Progressive Architecture, and through collaborative work with architecture and design firms, he has received recognition from the American Institute of Architects nationally, regionally and locally. In 2002-2003, he served as a Fulbright Scholar to Finland in association with the Society of Finnish Architects.

Wall earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in European History from Davidson College, a Bachelor of Architecture with honors degree from UT and a Master of Architecture degree from Rice University.
