Master of Architecture + Master of Landscape Architecture

The School of Architecture and the School of Landscape Architecture offer a dual program leading to the conferral of both the Master of Landscape Architecture degree and the Master of Architecture degree. This initiative addresses the growing need for graduates with an understanding of the disciplinary concepts, skills and agendas of both architecture and landscape architecture. We are interested in educating hybrid professionals that are both willing and able to make a strong difference in a world that is increasingly ecologically and systematically designed.

The dual degree program offers an accelerated path towards two degrees: the MLA and the M.Arch. The program is available to both 2G and 3G Master of Architecture students and requires an extra year of study.

In Studio, In the World 

Courses take place in the award-winning Art + Architecture Building's studios appointed with workstations and high-res monitors for all students. In the fall of 2014, the UT College of Architecture and Design opened the FabLab, a 20,000 square foot facility that boasts approximately $1,000,000 in new tools and machines. These new technologies allow students and faculty to explore digital fabrication and extend the purview of craft-based production that, in part, defines the sensibilities of the region of East Tennessee. We are positioned in a region with an amazing legacy of federally funded initiatives including the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and the Great Smokey Mountains National Park (GRSM). As the relationships between the natural environment and man-made systems change to reflect shifts in conceptions of the environment, large acreage of managed wilderness offer the opportunity to calibrate new environmentalisms.

Are you ready? Environmental Experience

In May 2019, the first-year MLA/M.Arch Dual Degree students will have a new 3 credit-hour design course. This 3 week design charette will include a field trip to Marfa, Texas, home of the Chinati Foundation and the work of American Artist, Donald Judd. This otherwise unassuming West Texas desert town has some of the most stunning creative work set in an amazing landscape. The field work we do there will give us an amazing experience of the environment and how design can respond spatially.
